THE PRACTICAL MEANING OF THE RESURRECTION
by Lynn D. Headrick
1. The resurrection Jesus is proven by the facts in the case:
a. Thomas put his finger in the nail-scared hands and his hand into the spear-pierced side of Jesus. He then exclaimed, "My Lord and my God!" John 20:28
b. Peter denied the Lord and later risked his own life before Annas and Caiaphas declaring that God raised Jesus from the dead. Acts 4:5-12
c. All the apostles saw Jesus after his resurrection.Acts 1:22
d. The resurrection proves Jesus to be the Son of God. Rom.1:3,4
e. The resurrection is the foundation of our faith, 1 Cor.15:14.
2. The purpose of this lesson is to describe some of the practical aspects of the resurrection of Christ.
The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead:
I. SETS JESUS APART FROM EVERY OTHER PERSON.
A. Jesus predicted his own death and resurrection. MT.16:21
B. John 20:19,20 shows proof that this prophecy was fulfilled.
II. IS FUNDAMENTAL TO OUR FAITH. 1 Corinthians 15:12-15
A. Fundamental #1-- Faith in truthfulness of the Bible. The scriptures testify of the resurrection of Jesus. We, as did the apostles, can believe the Scriptures. John 2:16-22.
B.Fundamental #2 -- Belief in a final judgment of all people before God. The Resurrection assures this. Acts 17:30,31
C. Fundamental #3 -- The necessity of abounding in the work of the Lord. 1 Corinthians 15:58 and context. Jesus was raised; we will be raised. Abounding in the work of the lord prepares us for our resurrection and judgment.
III. GIVES MEANING TO THE LORD'S SUPPER.
A. The supper is a meaningful act based upon the fact that Jesus was raised from the dead. If He was not raised the supper is a farce.
B. Jesus died and will come again. These facts are proclaimed in the Lord's Supper, 1 Cor.11:26.
IV. MAKES BAPTISM EFFECTUAL
A. Romans 6:1-11. The new life cannot be lived until one has been baptized. Christ had a new life following His resurrection and we have a new life following our being raised with Christ in baptism.
B. Colossians 2:12,13. God operated or worked by raising Jesus from the dead. Our faith in this is the same faith we have in God's work or operation of forgiving us our trespasses when we are baptized.
C. 1 Peter 3:21ff. God raised Jesus from the dead, it is just as certain that God saves us when we are baptized.
V. GIVES US HOPE OF LIFE BEYOND THE GRAVE. 1 Peter 1:3; 1 John 3:2,3
Conclusion: The resurrection of Jesus is a fact. It is also a fact that all of us will be raised and judged. In order to prepare for our own resurrection and judgment we need to obey the gospel.
